The Canadian Medical Association has honored the Kids Eat Smart Foundation of Newfoundland and Labrador with its Award for Excellence in Health Promotion.

The award, presented at General Council in August, recognizes individuals and organizations from outside of the health sector who have made a significant contribution toward a healthy population and a healthy community.

“The CMA’s vision of a healthy population can only be achieved through the actions of all Canadians,” said CMA Past President Dr. Colin McMillan. “We are therefore delighted to present the 2007 Award for Excellence in Health Promotion to the Kids Eat Smart Foundation Newfoundland and Labrador.”

Founded in 1992 in response to a province-wide need for a childhood nutrition program, the charitable organization supports volunteer-run nutrition programs that today provide healthy breakfasts, lunches and snacks to 17,000 school-aged children and youth in the province. Operating with a “nutrition first” mandate, it has established best practices that have been adopted by similar organizations elsewhere in Canada and, through education and health promotion, Kids Eat Smart continues to show leadership in the field of nutrition for children.

“Kids Eat Smart Foundation Newfoundland and Labrador is honored to receive this award. It’s a breath-taking moment for the Foundation and an inspiration in our progress toward achieving our vision: to ensure children throughout Newfoundland and Labrador attend school well-nourished to be ready to learn,” said Daphne LeDrew, executive director.

“The outstanding efforts of Kids Eat Smart Foundation can be translated directly into a future healthy life for a whole new generation,” said Dr. Guido Van Rosendaal, chair of the CMA Council on Health Care and Promotion. “Their success is a testament to the power of grassroots community action.”

“Nutrition is the critical core of Kids Eat Smart Clubs and provides children with the energy they need to concentrate and learn, but Kids Eat Smart Clubs bring so much more,” added LeDrew. “When children and youth start the day sitting shoulder to shoulder, cared for by a community of parents, teachers, peers, and supported by local businesses, community organizations, corporations and government, the power of community is tremendous. The result is an upward spiral that draws up education, physical health, and overall well-being.”
