The NLMA revised its membership renewal process last year to ensure members were not exposed to risks associated with not meeting licensure requirements of the Medical Act. Changes included:

  • Membership renewal invoices were distributed mid-December to ensure ample time to renew by the February 15 deadline;
  • A $250 late fee was be applied to members with a full or provisional license who missed the NLMA deadline;
  • Any member who missed the deadline had their NLMA benefits suspended;
  • NLMA notified CPSNL when members did not renew their membership by the deadline.

For more information, please refer to the President's Letter NLMA introduces new membership renewal procedures to satisfy requirements of Medical Act (PDF).

Why do you need to renew with the NLMA? As a physician licensed by the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Newfoundland and Labrador (Full or Provisional category), membership in the NLMA is required as a condition of the Medical Act. To avoid a late payment charge or potential disruptions in your license, please renew by February 15, 2018.

Should you also join the CMA? The NLMA encourages you to join the Canadian Medical Association. CMA membership provides you with access to valuable products and services carefully chosen to help you optimize your practice and your provision of patient care. The CMA is also your voice at the national level advocating for policies that support a healthy population and a vibrant medical profession. (Note, to access MD Financial Management, you must maintain membership in the CMA.) See also Why CMA? section or Value in Membership brochure (PDF)

First year in practice? If 2018 is your first full calendar year in practice, the CMA will discount their portion of your fee by 50 percent, a gesture to acknowledge and assist you in your transition from residency into practice. To take advantage of this discount, you must contact the NLMA (see below). Online renewal does not offer this discount.
