April 4, 2020 Covid-19 update from Government of Newfoundland and Labrador




Urgent Request from CMOH for unused NP Swabs UTM containers


The outbreak of COVID-19 is having a profound effect on existing testing supplies and we will shortly use up all of our existing supplies of Nasal Pharyngeal (NP) Swabs and Universal Transport Media (UTM) containers. In order to fill the gap we need to turn to other compatible collection devices for continued COVID-19 testing. We are requesting community physicians to arrange a local courier to pick up unused supplies of CTNG Swabs/Media containers. These should be delivered to the nearest laboratory specimen collection centers, or nearest Community Health Centers or Hospital Laboratory. From there these supplies will be returned back to Regional Hospital Laboratories to address needs for COVID-19 testing. Courier costs will be paid for by the local Regional Health Authority. See March 17 Letter.

Please Note: As a result of COVID-19, there is an unprecedented level of call volume on the 1-800 phone lines in general, as providers nationally are experiencing a lot of congestion on toll free lines. It has been determined that the intermittent issue is due to supplier network capacity. We understand that the telephone companies are trying to increase capacity within their systems so hopefully the problem will be rectified soon.  In the meantime we’re encouraging people to keep trying and also suggesting that people consider trying to access with other modalities, such as through the website.
