CMA provides website service to Canadian doctors and their patients


The CMA recently launched mydoctor.ca — a unique, online service that enables physicians to create and maintain their own sophisticated websites quickly, easily and inexpensively.

     As part of its ongoing mission to help Canadian physicians improve their professional lives, the Canadian Medical Association (CMA) recently launched mydoctor.ca — a unique, online service that enables physicians to create and maintain their own sophisticated websites quickly, easily and inexpensively.
     By using this innovative online tool, Canadian physicians and their staff will receive immediate, tangible benefits that include: a reduction in repetitive administrative tasks such as responding to telephone inquiries for information on office hours, directions and instructions; improved practice efficiency by helping doctors spend less time explaining and more time consulting; access to a trusted collection of online health care resources, including websites and health information that doctors can safely recommend to their patients; and, reduced online and legal liability by following CMPA best practice guidelines.
     A 2002 survey showed that 51 per cent of patients requested information from their physicians via the Internet. Today, mydoctor.ca enhances physician-patient communication substantially by offering patients online access to information from their physician 24 hours a day. Not only does this help patients prepare for appointments and better understand the services offered by the medical clinic, they can also access information that complements their knowledge of their illnesses and treatments. Patients will have a reliable source of health information and their physicians won't have to grapple with patients arriving with Internet printouts from questionable sources. As a result, patients can maximize the quality of the time they spend with their physicians. In short, the service encourages a more prepared, more productive interaction between physicians and patients.
     Dr. Sunil Patel, past-president of the Canadian Medical Association, created his own practice website using mydoctor.ca, noting: “I'm looking forward to offering my website to my patients. It took me less than 30 minutes to set it up and I know my patients will value the information resources to which I can now direct them. I have even been able to add some of my own local resources to reflect my practice profile and my community.”
     According to Dr. Patel, this is just the first phase of mydoctor.ca. “Physicians that sign up with us today will be able to ride a wave of innovation over time that they would never be able to match if they were trying to build a site from scratch themselves. Unlike most commercial providers, physicians also know that CMA member services are designed from a physician's viewpoint first and that commercial considerations are secondary. As new information and communications technologies emerge and the potential for strengthened online physician/patient communication increases, the mydoctor.ca service will evolve to reflect these changes.”
     The new member service will be managed and supported by GlobalMedic, the CMA's Internet subsidiary. Physicians can access it by going to cma.ca or directly to mydoctor.ca. With mydoctor.ca, personalized practice websites are easy to create, preview and manage. Using easy to follow, step-by-step instructions, doctors can have their own site up and running in less than 30 minutes. Maintaining the site is just as easy, with no technical training required. What's more, CMA will help ensure that resource links are kept up to date.
     Dr. Jay Mercer, GlobalMedic's medical director, stated: “My staff and I have already seen significant time savings and experienced the benefits of improved patient preparation since I introduced this into my practice earlier this summer.”
