The Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada has awarded Dr. S. Bharati Reddy the 2008 Specialist of the Year Award for Atlantic Canada. Dr. Reddy was presented the award in St. John’s on February 4, 2009, for her exceptional work in 2008.

The award, also known as the Prix d'excellence, recognizes Fellows of the Royal College who have outstanding qualities and have made significant contributions as medical educators or provided outstanding service to their community and to the Royal College. It is bestowed annually to specialists in five regions across Canada who have been selected by their peers and colleagues.

Dr. Reddy was raised in St. John’s and graduated from Memorial University’s Faculty of Medicine in 1981. She then entered a rotating internship and core internal medicine training at Queen’s University and the University of Toronto, graduating with a general internist fellowship in 1987.

A year later, she returned to St. John’s where she currently practices as a gastroenterologist at her office on Campbell Avenue and as general internist at St. Clare’s Mercy Hospital. Dr. Reddy is also a clinical assistant professor in the MUN Faculty of Medicine with clinical and research interests that include inflammatory bowel disease and viral hepatitis.

Dr. Wallace Ingram, who nominated and presented Dr. Reddy with the award, says he and other colleagues have been impressed with Dr. Reddy’s equanimity and energy as well as her outstanding work in both gastroenterology and in the hospital emergency department.
